Find your Windows 11 version and full build
Press Win + R, enter winver and read both the version and OS build. For example, 22631.x identifies the 23H2 build family; the digits after the dot identify its update revision. Settings → System → About also lists Windows specifications.
Windows 11 build-number reference
The developer confirms that the Windows 11 build families below have been tested and passed with the pack. Base builds identify the release family; they are not a record of every cumulative-update revision.
| Windows 11 version | Base build | Pack test result | Playback troubleshooting note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 21H2 | 22000 | Tested — passed | Earlier Windows media baseline; identify installed extensions and the player. |
| 22H2 | 22621 | Tested — passed | Earlier baseline; compare the full update revision when investigating changes. |
| 23H2 | 22631 | Tested — passed | The release immediately before the 24H2 AC-3 provision change. |
| 24H2 | 26100 | Tested — passed | AC-3 is no longer included as standard; installation history matters. |
| 25H2 | 26200 | Tested — passed | Check decoder availability and update revision rather than assuming uniform support. |
| 26H2 | 26300 | Tested — passed | Use the same extension, application and driver checks; consult current release notes. |
| 26H1 | 28000 | Tested — passed | A separate release for new devices, rather than the normal upgrade path from 24H2/25H2. |
These results apply to the pack’s playback route, including its integrated MPC Home Cinema player. Built-in Windows apps and Store extensions are separate checks. Build numbers do not form a simple chronological compatibility threshold. Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information is the reference for current builds. Older families are listed to help identify existing installations, not to recommend staying on an outdated release.
The confirmed AC-3 / Dolby Digital change
Microsoft changed standard AC-3 provision at 24H2. Upgraded systems can retain it, and manufacturers can supply a decoder. This explains differing results on machines with the same build family. AC-3 playback help.
HEVC needs more than a build number
For apps using Windows media decoding, check whether HEVC Video Extensions is installed and available to that device/account. In Edge, Microsoft also identifies extension licensing and the Windows Media Foundation decoder path as possible failure points. GPU capabilities, driver and the file’s HEVC profile also matter. A DirectShow filter does not supply a Store entitlement or guarantee playback in every Windows app. Compare HEVC playback options.
Choose the playback route you intend to use
- MPC Home Cinema: use the pack’s integrated player and DirectShow filters.
- Windows Media Player Legacy: compatible DirectShow paths can use installed filters, but some formats use a different pipeline.
- Modern Windows Media Player, Photos and browser playback: check the app’s platform decoder and extension requirements separately.
Dolby Access is for supported Dolby experiences, including Atmos setup. It is not a universal AC-3 playback replacement. Windows N editions may also need Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack for missing Windows media features.
Useful details when reporting a playback problem
Include the full build and update revision, player/version, video and audio codecs inside the file, graphics model/driver, and whether the failure affects one file or many. For audio, include the output device and speaker layout. Identify the Windows installation as an upgrade or clean installation if the problem concerns AC-3.
The pack’s optional hardware survey helps build an aggregate compatibility picture. In Windows 11 Codec Pack 4.0.1 its finish-page checkbox starts selected; you can preview the information or clear the box before finishing. Read the survey information.
